"This shot was taken at dusk, near my home. On this night I noticed the interesting texture of the water and began shooting wide open to focus on that. Though shooting high frame rates wide open can yield failures in a constantly moving ocean, it was worth the risk for this stand out image." - Ed Sloane
The April Newsletter Covershot Competition winner will receive a Canon G1X – featuring the largest image sensor to ever feature in a Canon compact! For your chance to win, simply email us your 'GO LARGE' themed image (up to 3MB, landscape orientation). The chosen image will also be featured in next month's newsletter. The winner will be announced on the official michaels Facebook page on Monday April 30th, so be sure to like our page for updates! Full competition and prize details can be found here.
Don't shoot standing up - When you are shooting street photography, crouching allows you to get a more interesting and dynamic angle. This applies especially when you are taking photos of people either sitting down or photos of kids. You want your perspective to be at least eye-level with them, if not lower. Read more.

In August 1968 Czech born Josef Koudelka witnessed and photographed the Soviet invasion of Prague, capturing the barbarity of events that took place. Smuggled out in secret for fear or reprisal, Koudelka's negatives were placed in the hands of the Magnum agency and published anonymously in The Sunday Times Magazine. These images became dramatic international symbols for which Koudelka was awarded the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Gold Medal for photographs requiring exceptional courage.

“I have to shoot three cassettes of film a day, even when not 'photographing', in order to keep the eye in practice.”

- Josef Koudelka
